Writing A Research Paper

Hector Said:

Trekkies! I'm writing a paper. Help, give me some ideas?

We Answered:

I suggest your jumping off point might be the recent documentary How William Shatner Changed the World which discusses how the series influenced the folks who would eventually make a lot of Star trek tech a reality: http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/How_William…

Using a Research Paper as a Writing Sample?

We Answered:

I would look for something else - perhaps a short reading response assignment or something of that nature. You want to make sure they understand your ability to structure an argument and they won't be able to do that if most of the paper is missing. If you do decide to shorten it, pick the best section or two and just submit that. Make sure everything makes sense - you'll likely have to add the introduction and conclusion from the original paper.

Whatever you end up submitting, attach a cover letter explaining the assignment and how much and what kind of editing has been done. You can summarize the missing sections if you took a longer paper and cut it down.

I am writing research paper, and to help me write this paper I have to know the properties of Lithium. Please?

We Answered:

Like other alkali metals, lithium has a single valence electron which it will readily lose to form a cation, indicated by the element's low electronegativity. As a result, lithium is easily deformed, highly reactive, and has lower melting and boiling points than most metals. These and many other properties attributable to alkali metals' weakly held valence electron are most distinguished in lithium, as it possesses the smallest atomic radius and thus the highest electronegativity of the alkali group. In addition, lithium has a diagonal relationship with magnesium, an element of similar atomic and ionic radius. Chemical resemblances between the two metals include the formation of a nitride in N2, the formation of an oxide when burnt in O2, salts with similar solubilities, and thermally unstable carbonates and nitrides.[7]

Lithium is soft enough to be cut with a knife, though this is more difficult than cutting sodium. The fresh metal has a silvery-white color which only remains untarnished in dry air.[7] Lithium has about half the density of water, giving solid sticks of lithium metal the odd heft of a light-to-medium wood such as pine. The metal floats highly in hydrocarbons; in the laboratory, jars of lithium are typically composed of black-coated sticks held down in hydrocarbon mechanically by the jar's lid and other sticks.

Lithium is greatly heat-resistant, possessing a low coefficient of thermal expansion and the highest specific heat capacity of any solid element. Lithium has also been found to be superconductive below 400 ?K. This finding paves the way for further study of superconductivity, as lithium's atomic lattice is the simplest of all metals.

What are tips for keeping track of sources while writing research paper?

We Answered:

As you're doing your research, for each source write down the full, properly formatted citations on a separate sheet of paper, or type them into a separate document. Then assign numbers to them, and as you are writing your paper list the numbers in place of the citations (I find this goes a lot faster than constantly writing out the authors' names). Then when you're done you can go back and fill in the actually citations according to the number you used. Having the sources in one place is particularly convenient for the bibliography because then you don't have to go re-find your sources to figure out where they came from. And if you typed them into a document you can just copy and paste them into your paper.
