It's not an academic publication but the Associated Press Style Book is considered to be about as standard a publication as you can get on writing consistency and correctness for this kind of thing.

Here's the entry on the United Kingdom:

United Kingdom. It consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain (or Britain) consists of England, Scotland and Wales. Ireland is independent of the United Kingdom.

OK - so that doesn't really answer your question. So...here's the extra bits. It's usually referred to as above - "the United Kingdom" when referring to it directly as a region. Only capitalize "the" at the start of a sentence. (e.g The United Kingdom is in Europe).

However, if you are referring to it as an adjective, then use "UK" (e.g. The UK office is in London). There's no need for periods (U.K.)

I would recommend this approach for academic writing. (so the answer to your question is "The patterns of immigrant integration in the United Kingdom".

But... there are a couple of things to consider. Firstly, some abbreviations and acronyms are universally known to the extent that that's how we know them (FBI, CIA etc). The UK falls into this category.

In fact the Guardian Style Guide has this entry:

The BBC Style Guide discusses the UK in it's section on devolution. This is the first paragraph:

The United Kingdom is made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales (although many people from Northern Ireland regard themselves as British).The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are not part of the UK.

So the BBC spells it out in full the first time, then switches to the shortened version (without full stops). I would use this in less formal situations such as business reports/articles.

In informal situations (blogs, letters) I would just use "the UK".

Also, at the start of the sentence it may not be necessary to include the definite article. For example, I would use this: "United Kingdom passports are no longer required for travel to outer space".

As with states in the US, you can use either for addresses.

There is a great book by Umberto Eco that should be translated in English and is called "Come scrivere la tesi di laurea" ("How to write a college dissertation" - or something like that). It's very useful even for a short proposals and I strongly advise you to read it - it helped me a lot when I was in your situation. Good luck!

The crime rate in this country is out of control, in the prisons there is no rehab that works because we can't change the heart. The Spiritual part of that person. The solution was found in a pre release program called the inner change initiative program ran by Prisonfellowship ministries. Unfortunately it was taken to court by the aclu and now it is on its way to the supreme court. The reasons given by the aclu was that it was about Christianity. The numbers show that an inmates chances of returning to prison are about 60 percent except in the Christianity program where its about 10 percent.
