I would advise a handwritten covering letter, only when requested.

Initial applicant selection is normally carried out by a junior staff member, to strict and sometimes strange criteria (viz. straight stamps on letter.)

Remember the average time a recruiter has, to make preliminary decisions is 30 seconds. If you do not make your skills and relevant qualifications readable in that time, then your application is likely to find its way to file 13!

A handwritten cover letter might be attractive but it will impede the selector's search for his/her employment criteria.

Why you are applying for the job - except for money. (Can be tough for a supermarket - say you want to work in a team.)

When you are available to start, and the hours you can work.

Everything else should be on your CV.
