Wow, you're lucky.
I had to write a 15-20 page biography and analysis on a person we knew for my AP English Lit. class.
The hardest part was knowing what questions to ask my person and then try to find a connection and a theme to them.
But what you have to do sounds pretty easy. Simply look up the basic facts: Where they lived, date of birth, parents and then how he/she got interested into the sport, how many games they've played, with what team. That type of stuff.

I'd pick an obscure sport and person, such as Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, a famous falconer from back in the day.

if you are researching and writing facts it is a research paper. Things can fall under more than one category. So you are writing a research-biography

It's only my opinion but I would start with the diaries and sort of copy and edit them as you go.

You will probably be re-writing anyway so I think that would be a good way to start.

It's probably negotiated between the author and writer, so it depends on what you negotiate.
