1> definitely. follow up. Professors are VERY busy, so they may have slipped their mind.
2> usually, references letters should be from a credible source (ie. professors, teachers, employers...) you can use a friends or family, but the school will tend to think they are some what biased... and thus may nut carry as much weight as those written by a professor.

Hi there!

Good on you for writing him a letter! I'm an Air Force wife, and when my husband and I spend time apart, we write every other day. Writing so often does mean that you run out of material rather rapidly!

My advice would be to write as if you were talking to him. Talk about what you have been doing at school/uni/work. Talk about social things you have been doing. Talk about the local news, include a newspaper or interesting article if you can. Even mention it when you hit your toe on the ens of the bed, or put your shirt on backwards. Seemingly insignificant things keep the feeling of being there.

He wont be able to write back in as much detail, and he will only be able to mention certain things. He may not even get a chance to write or get down to the px to send it for a while, but don't think this means he doesn't appreciate the letters.

Send things that are unique to your town. If there is a big tree that everyone knows, send him a leaf. Send him pictures of people back home, friends and family being themselves, or doing stupid things. (side note: remember that any pics you may send could be viewed by anyone, so don't send anything you don't mind everyone seeing).

Tell him that you are proud of him. Tell him you can't wait to catch up with him again, that you are looking forward to his passing out parade. If he is away for important dates, remember him on them, birthdays, holidays etc etc.

What you write in the letter, to be honest, doesn't matter as much as the fact that you wrote to him.

Lol, well just tell her what you've been doing. If you've done anything exciting then tell her.
Haha i always like getting letters.. I don't care what they say, just getting a letter is exciting enough ^.^
And if she is your best friend I am pretty sure she don't really care what you say, hearing from you is enough lol.
