I'm not sure I would agree that academic writing is qualitative and business is quantitative (those are actually research method and types of data - both are used in both forms of writing). Academic writing is based on documenting and supporting an argument with citaition (this is generally not done in busness writing). Business writing servers mulpitple purposes - so there are multiple forms (e.g. memo's, reports, evaluations, etc.). Academic writing is usually about making a case and informing an audiance of an idea or process.

This is a very broad category because there are different academic writing types.

The differences between academic and other types of writing come from the differences in purpose. In particular, the purpose of academic writing is to show that you have:

* learned about a particular topic
* the ability to reformulate those ideas and pieces of information to suit a particular task or answer a particular question
* gained the ability to work independently in your particular field of study.

Differences Between Academic And Business Writing:

* students write to learn
* business writers write to get work done – to recommend actions.

Remember that English professors have spent their entire life for the most part, in school. Some of them spend their summers in other countries, thinking that the experience will broaden them, It does in fact broaden them, but in a way that shows.

Grammar and academic writing is their entire world. If you were to write a beautiful masterpiece of a poem, the first thing they would see would be the spelling and grammar.

Academic means just that! Something that is and always has been the same. A foregone conclusion to whatever exists.

Get through the class the best you can and then forget about it. The gap between English and the manner in which people communicate is wide indeed.

Once they get an idea in their heads, there is no shaking it loose and logic does not prevail.
