Teaching Creative Writing

Sheila Said:

Where can i teach a Creative writing class?

We Answered:

Maybe volunteer at the local library. Sometimes they hold classes there...generally they are for adults, though. If you want to work with young adults/school aged students, you'll need a certificate for teaching.

Thomas Said:

Send Writing samples for a creative writing professorship job evenif not asked to?

We Answered:

You can get in contact and ask (provided they don't have a no calls/e-mail policy), but it's probably better not to provide anything until you're asked for it. They may only want to see writing samples from candidates who make it past the initial review.

Mathew Said:

should I go to Columbia in Chicago for my creative writing teaching degree or Northern Illinois University?

We Answered:

Nothern Illinois University. Columbia is very expensive. Columbia would probably be a cooler experience though.

Jesse Said:

How do I become a creative writing tutor ?

We Answered:

You really need to practice your art first. Get published, enter competitions to build up your writing CV.
This is what I done and now teach for Adult Education. My students all want to get published and I could not have advised them without having been published myself. You would also need to continue writing and perhaps working towards having a novel or non fiction book published.
Good luck

Ernest Said:

What steps should I take in becoming a college professor in creative writing?

We Answered:

To teach at college level you will need a masters or a PHD. It depends on what type of college you would like to teach at. A college or CC only a maters. A university you will need a PhD and some experience. With creative writing it will help if you are published. Start writing short stories and send them into literary magazines. This will also help you get into colleges.

Melvin Said:

How do I become a high school creative writing teacher?

We Answered:

I have an MFA in creative writing (I received it from UNLV in 2000). This is certainly the best way forward. An MFA is a terminal degree, meaning, you can teach at a university level (be a professor!). In my case, I earned my MFA, taught a few classes as a grad student, and then found additional adjunct professor jobs.

After you have experience teaching at the university level (something that's pretty easy to get into), teaching a the high school level is easy.

Check out the many different jobs available below at the leading adjunct professor website.

This amendment is in response to the next answer. Absolutely agree that teaching High School is NEVER easy. However, the question was very specific regarding the teaching of creative writing in high school. There are a great number of professionals who come into high schools to teach focused courses in areas of their expertise without the usual credentials. My mother has done this for years with just a masters degree. Working part time in a high school can very satisfying and does not generally require the same level of credentials.
