Script Writing Format

Ian Said:

can you use bold or italics when writing dialogue in script format?

We Answered:

You can use "snicker quotes," but italics generally denotes action that is taking place somewhere else (like on a TV or a movie screen, etc.)

You can also just capitalize I suppose but that's generally used to introduce characters or significant props.

Toni Said:

What is the deference between writing format of script & screenplay ?

We Answered:

Screenplay and script are the same thing. A script is a general term for any kind of script (dialogue and action to be played out). A screenplay is the particular type of script that is used to make films.

A screenplay doesn't have a screenplay and a separate script. It has a screenplay, which may also be called the script but it's the same thing.

Writing Screenplays - what is standard script format?

We Answered:

You cant go wrong by making sure you have a good word processor. Word is great, naturally, and there are toolbars you can download that have default script writing functions: slugline, action, character, dialogue etc...

There are several different formats for different "venues": film, television.

The BBC have a section on their expansive site about the television format,

for hollywood, i found this article useful: http://www.oscars.org/nicholl/format.htm…

as a script writing myself, i found FinalDraft script writing programme incredible to work with. It gives you summaries, character listings, reports of word repetition etc... its expensive but worth it if you plan to make a go of your work.

I found reading scripts from Drews Script o Rama extremely useful. the formatted ones (not so much the transcripts) are good for getting the format in your head. Useful exercise is to read a script and then see the movie afterwards to get an idea how your mind works when it comes to the written word. Make sure its a script that you haven't already watched as a movie.

If you have any questions or need hep, give, just email!

Jackie Said:

Where online can i find a list for screenwriting (script writing) shorthand, formats and tips?

We Answered:

celtx.com

free sceenwriting software...

I definitely wouldn't recommend anything else, celtx is my favorite program! especially for people who don't have the money to afford those expensive software packages like Final Draft. Um, as far as notation goes, just google that stuff... things like O.S. (off screen) and V.O. (voice over) are just typical things that you'll find. :)

good luck!!!!!!!!
