Priscilla Said:

why is language important when writing reports? can you use examples to explain your answer?

We Answered:

I'm not sure what you mean here.
Are you talking about word choice? Because as Mark Twain said: "The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug." Different words, even if they're considered synonyms for most purposes can carry slightly different meanings and connotations. Your word choice will often vary with your intended audience as well. Different words may come across differently in different environments.
Or maybe you're not talking about vocabulary but grammar. This is also important because, aside from poor grammar reflecting poorly on the writer (especially in academic circles), incorrect or misused grammar can also completely change the meaning of a sentence. Take the title of the well-known book, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves". The titles refers to a grammar joke. You can look it up if you're interested, but basically the idea is that the "Eats shoots and leaves" bit was supposed to be describing the diet of a panda. By inserting that comma though, "eats" has become part of a list. So now instead of having a two-member list of edible items, we have a three-member list of actions. Grammar is important!
Language is also important for clarity. An ambiguously-worded question is much more likely to receive imprecise or inapplicable answers.
