"For A Screenwriter.. I heard when your first starting out to write and send Treatments instead.? how much do>?

We Answered:

Well you bought their book didn't you? I'm amazed they're still printing it.

The only time you'll ever write a treatment is when you're working with an actual production company. Usually on a write for hire project, where you've been brought in as the writer. Nobody buys from a treatment unless you have an established track record of sold and produced scripts that have made money.

There was a brief period where treatments sold but in these leaner meaner times, Studios are cutting back and retrenching with tried and true products that they've made money from in the past. That means remakes and sequels. Anybody getting something new through the Studio system right now, has a proven track record.

Don't do this for the money, it'll drive you nuts. You've got to do it because you're drawn to it. Because there's a lot of heart break between the successes and getting a film made, is not always the best thing that can happen to you.

I'm a produced writer with feature film and TV credits.

Travis Said:

We hired a freelance writer and her work is being published in a trade mag. What should the "by line" read?

We Answered:

I'd think for the by-line "Jane Doe of Health Writing Inc. writing for My Company" could work. You own the article, but you don't own her, and that needs to be clear. Alternatively it could go in with by-line "Jane Doe" and more information provided in the bio, after your company information. Before you do anything though, check your contract with the writer, probably crediting is spelled out in there somewhere.
