_Eugene Onegin_ is a unique work in that it manages to be both witty and romantic at the same time. In other words, it is both an 18th and a 19th century sensibility.

The eighteenth century was the age of distance and irony and humor as is evidenced in Pushkin's treatment of the attractiveness of Tatyana

The nineteenth century, the age of romantic feeling, is evidenced by the depth of feeling the T inspires in Eugene Onegin

These two elemenst never fight each other, as they might do in lesser hands. Instead Pushkin makes them complementary.

He has great feeling for nature, both as projection of an observers feelings, and in itself

The poem is quintessentially Russian in its sensibility--energetic, intelligwnt, sprightly, and fierce

It ends in a pathos I believe in more than that of Faust for Gretchen because one doesn't interpret the affair as an affair of unequals

The stanza form is original.

It's interesting that there are so many good translators of the poem, none of whom likes the other person's translation. That's proof of the depth and particularity of it, as it appears to those who can read it in Russian, as I wish I could.
