Learn How To Write

Courtney Said:

Computer Script Learn/Write?

We Answered:

We need to know what kind of computer, what operating system, what scripting language and what power sources (and the data they provide and how obtained).

A simple script (DOS) may not be up to the task. A Unix shell script, on the other hand, may.

Teens or Kids - Did you learn how to write in cursive in school?

We Answered:

I am a professional. I only use it to sign my name. I learned cursive in the first grade. I went to first grade in a foreign country where it is taught from the beginning. At one time, cursive was very important. Everything was handwritten. Any letter, memo, form or note was hand written. It's much less important now. Everything is typed. Even job applications are filled out for places like Target and Walmart on line. My daughter who is seventeen learned cursive, but she doesn't use it often. Her high school teachers require essays to be typed or word processed. Even back in the 1970's when I was in high school, I had to type every essay I turned in beginning in my junior year. A university professor would never accept a hand written essay. University students take their lecture notes on a small laptop. You can type much faster than you can write and you don't have to look at what you're writing; you can look at the professor. At work, I can't imagine sending out a handwritten memo to 50 people. How would I get it to them? Scan it and put it into email? ooookay, that would make the whole office's day to download that attachment. Even if I were writing a personal letter, I'd probably type it. It allows me to edit and improve on the letter. The drafting processes is much more cumbersome when you hand write something. I don't think I'd bother to read a hand written photocopied Christmas newsletter slipped into a card. Unless someone is a professional calligrapher, it's just not that pretty.

Good writing and good penmanship aren't the same thing. The art of writing is being lost, but not because we aren't writing everything out long hand. The art of writing is being lost because the sublties of writing are ignored. People use acronyms and you use the "&" rather than typing the more formal "and". People aren't interested in reading at all. Most people don't read a newspaper anymore, they don't read novels, they don't read magazines. The go on YA and think that's reading. right......... Someone could have the most beautiful penmanship in the world and be a lousy writer. If your handwriting is beautiful, but what you wrote makes no sense, what good is it? Or a person can be a wonderful writer and have lousy cursive. The art of penmanship is being lost because our society expects everything to be typed.

In spite of the fact that I think that cursive is not as important as it once was, I do think it should still be taught. Schools aren't placing as much emphasis simply because it's just not as important to our success after school as it once was. But there is a place for cursive on a nice card or in a note. Your daughter should learn cursive and practice it if she thinks it looks pretty. She can use it on notes for herself, to friends, and for informal communication. Professors aren't going to accept it and it won't be acceptable in the workplace either, everything will be either word processed or otherwise computerized, but it does have it's place.

How Can I Learn Writing Skills?

We Answered:

You could take an evening class. But really its just a matter of practise and getting your brain to work in that way. Try writing exactly as you would speak, when letter writing. Don't put blocks in your own way by thinking things like, I can't write that its boring, or it would take too long; all that detail is what makes it interesting to read.

Practise descriptive writing by first thinking of someone you know whom you feel passionate about (either love or hate). Next, think of an everyday situation with which you are familiar (a train journey, going to a pub, etc). Imagine your person carrying out this activity and then write it all down in intricate detail, putting in all your passionate love or hatred of them.

Also, try to get some objective criticism of what you write and take on board what is said to help you improve.

Any tips on learning how to write (or possibly read) in japanese or chinese?

We Answered:

iFirst, I want to let you know that it is great you are learning how to speak Mandarin Chinese. In order to learn Mandarin Chinese there are many things you can and should do. This one is not necessary, but if possible take a class. Taking a class is great, however some people teach themselves Mandarin. Regardless if you are taking a class or not you should check out some of the free resources on the web for learning Chinese. If you can purchase a textbook with audio, listen to the audio often and try to imitate the native speakers voices. I also recommend watching tv shows and listening to music in Chinese so you can acquire an ear for the language. Last, if possible, try to find a native speaker who you can practice with.

i want to speak english i can understand, learn write&read. i m newly coming 4om india in u.k pliz give me advi

We Answered:

One thing that should help is listening to American Artists music. Pop music will probably work best. Music like Kelly Clarkson, Nickelback, Rascal Flats, Death Cab for Cutie, etc. Practice sing the music, look up the words in the dictionary that you are singing to see how they are. Merriam-Webster online has a great online dictionary that actually says the word for you and tells you what it means. The website is: http://www.m-w.com/

Also, record any american speaking interviews you can (like American politcians, film and tv stars) then play them back and practice saying what they are saying. Again, look up any words you dont understand. I believe these two things should help you speak english better and will also help you assimilate.
