Improving Writing Skills

Claudia Said:

What are some good ways of improving my writing skills?

We Answered:

READ LOTS AND LOTS OF BOOKS!!!!!

Ana Said:

Any ways to improving writing skills, difficult learning?

We Answered:

My daughter has a real rough time. Here is what I have her do.

1 Write your paragraph(s)
2 Break each sentence down and number them on a separate sheet of paper. Kind of like if your teacher had you copy sentences off a black board
3 Proof read your sentences and make the corections.
4 Write the corrected sentences down into paragraph form for your final copy.

I know it sounds like a lot, but it really helps.
Good luck.

Simple recommendations for improving writing skills?

We Answered:

Try to change all the verbs to active to give your writing more power.
When editing, go to all subjects and try to put a unique adjective in front (then read it and omit the awkward ones).
Vary sentence lengths; have short ones, long ones, compound ones, complex ones (stops it from being monotonous and mundane).
Include alliteration when you want to stress something subtly.
Don't be afraid of starting sentences with "and" or "but" occasionally (I know it's wrong in elementary and middle school, but it's okay if you use it properly, meaning to stress the significance of a sentence in relation to the previous one).

Good reading sources for improving reading and writing skills?

We Answered:

For writing skill, read more and write more will definitely help. There is also said to be a way: get some articles from some good writers, copy it by your hand writing for one or two times, and do it every day. You will learn some writing skills from the good writers eventually...

For a quick improvement on reading skills, I'll suggest you to look for some speed reading course to learn with. I don't have good reading skill and understanding in the past too, but since reading occupies quite a lot of my time every day, I've looked for some ways to improve it. I learned with some reading course and now I'm much improved.

I can also recommend the course that I've tried with success. It has quite positive feedback on Amazon, and it includes modules of reading speed, comprehension, and vocabulary. It is quite affordable as well There is a website telling how to get the most out of the course, and it guides me to choose the online version of the course. I put the links here for your reference.

Darlene Said:

i know this sounds retarded and uninteresting but i have to write a paper on improving my writing skills?

We Answered:

First you state what your goals are in the paper you are writing.
Next, you state that by learning better grammar and correct punctuation, your writing skills will improve.
So if your goal is to be a free lance writer for let's say "The Houston Chronicle", you are going to need to be able to get your point across to your readers.
If no one understands what you are saying or trying to say, your submission will be turn down.
No acceptance means no money. No money means no eats and you pretty much know the rest of the story from there on out.
I hope this explains things better for you. English 101, is difficult at first unless you just love to write. Everything comes with practice.
If you are looking for ways to practice your writing skills? Go to Words/Wordplay on this site. Look for Questions by "Sunshine loves Matt baby" She asks folks to write stories. And I can tell you it's great when you're having "writer's block."

i need advice about improving writing skills?

We Answered:

Like one of the earlier answers says, reading is one of your best bets. I try to read a new book or play every week. Bring in a lot of variety into your reading because that will allow you to see what works for each author, making it easier to pick out what you like. You might like something about Greek tragedy, but there could be some elements you don't like. Make note of these, and try to incorporate what you like into your work.
You should get a journal-I use a spiral bound notebook-to record your daily activities or routines. I try to be as detailed as possible when trying to write about experiences, and that helps me see what needs trimming. When you read one of your new books, write down what you like about it. I have found that the only way to develop your own voice is to see how the best writers find theirs.
It takes a lot of practice, but you will start noticing changes if you analyze what you read.
Best of luck to you.
