I think that you're problem is that you never finish your lyrics and it's real bad, because you should make the lyrics from the beginning to the end. If you don't then you will lose your inspiration. Doing the lyrics in pieces is wrong because is very hard to put them together. When you start writing a song you must finish it even if you are doing something else in the moment of the inspiration. Write every single word which passes through your mind and don't stop working, because if you stop you can't continue that song anymore.

Hm, if you could give me an example I could help you. I've written a few songs. Maybe think of the personal experience, and think of things similar to it. Perhaps the theme is to Move Along, (just an example, not the AAR song) Maybe at one point you experienced a death to someone you know, but then it could also apply to something like not being able to write a song, y'know?

I write lyrics first (like a poem tbh like the rhyming bit) then add music once i'm happy with them
You can write a song however you like
Most songwriters do that :-) writer the lyrics first them add music and a tune to it

What I would do is this, first write the music and melody for the song. Then start humming the melody and the lyrics should relate to the mood of the song, at least this is what I do. But the opposite can also work for some people, just not for me. I like you're idea of writing out the story too. I'd love to hear it once you're done.
