How To Write Short Stories

Barbara Said:

I am writing short stories in the hope that I might one day write a book. How can I make money from this?

We Answered:

You can submit short stories to magazines. I've had several published - the money is not brilliant, I average about 70 quid for a 500 -1000 word story, but it is good practise and just being accepted for publication builds your confidence. There is a book you can buy called the UK writer's handbook, published annually, that gives contact details and submission guidelines for all major publishers.

Bonnie Said:

Hi! Anyone knows where I can find ghostwriters to write short stories? How much do they charge?

We Answered:

I have written many children's stories for my own website. However, off late I do not have the time. Therefore I ask a website called http://www.freelancewritingdesk.com to do the work for me. They have also written some informative articles on children's health and education for my website. Regarding the rates, maybe you could check out with them.

How do I write short stories?

We Answered:

when you read the title think this
"What if...?"
imagine a character now. think of of a different type of personality, one that is kind of unexpected.
use your what if question. if your character went through the what if situation, what would happen?
then remember this: interesting plot = obstacles, obstacles, obstacles. make things harder and harder for him/her.
and then when things get as hard as it can be, call it climax. then find a way to make things come out even in a way that the reader can still know that the characters will continue in the story.
just remember: the situations gotta be so big it has to change the character. and dont make the solution of the plot dumb or obvious.
hope this helps!

I can never write short stories - where do people get 'short ideas'?

We Answered:

I used to be the same way - I never wrote short stories because all my ideas were novel-length. Now I'm mainly a short story writer (though I dabble in both). The change happened for me after about a year, and it was a consequence of two specific things: reading a massive amount of short fiction and having deadlines that forced me to finish short pieces.

In a short story, your beginning, middle, and end have to involve one main event. If you're writing about someone getting attacked by a bear, the arc goes something like this: The man is in the woods > he gets attacked > he gets rescued. You have to tell a complete story within 5,000 words or so, and that makes you use every word very carefully. Short story language is much more deliberate and powerful because of it. If a word isn't necessary, axe it. Also, I've found that starting smaller - writing one or two page flash fiction - helped me write longer short stories because it taught me how to condense it all down.

Best of luck!
