That's what major profs are for. The literature review is relatively easy, you will just need to find relevant material about what is already known on your topic. Chronologic organization is usually fine. Start off with the earliest known work or documented use of the leaves for these purposes. It's simplest if some, but not too much, research has been done. I'm sure you know why this work that you are proposing is important; put those thoughts down on paper. Likely you will find information during the literature review that will help (unanswered questions and such.)

Be sure to go in to your advisor with some good solid ideas and work already well-begun. DON'T just show up and say, "I have no idea how to do it." Write it up as best you can, even if you are unsure. Then s/he will be able to help and steer you in the right direction if you need it.

An expression of interest is usually the first stage of a longer proposal process. You usually just have to write to the contracting body to say that you want to receive the tender documents.

On large public sector procurements you may also have to go through pre-qualification before being selected to write a proposal.

there are books like MLA that give examples to write research papers. well they have these book for science, research and science too. check with your bookstore and they should have an idea to what you are talking about..
