How To Write Poetry

Kenneth Said:

how can i write effective poetry for children?

We Answered:

Cute & clever.

I saw a dog,
it slept like a log
in a bog...

is too cliche. Well, kind of. Anyways, it's stuff like that that's lame. Variety is key also. Yeah, keep things fairly simple, but switch it up a bit! Go into lots of description & colorful language...it'll brighten up any topic.

How can i learn to write poetry?

We Answered:

do what the other people said =)

the poem you wrote, wasn't really anything like a poem, if you know what i mean?.

like umm.....
you said:
Walking down the road
watching the cars go by
moving in vibrant colors
up the left down the right
******
try to use different words like:
Walking down this dirt road path
Feeling the cars go by
Moving in neeon strikes
Up the left down the right
*******
now, do you see what I mean?
poetry is a story but in words that, you have to think what that person is trying to make it mean.
********
like instead of saying:
I want a world of peace
try saying:
I want a world that's golden
**********
and also, don't tell us something is beautiful,
show us it's beautiful!

How could I write good poetry?

We Answered:

I am going to give you the name of an author who's poetry is simple to read but so heart wrenching it gives new meaning to the word's passion, sorrow, pain, and love his name Kahlil Gibran get all of his book's that you can, He also has art work in it and he studied under the french artist Rodin.
One book in particular that I would recommend reading by him is
(The Broken Wing's).

I hope that this will be helpful and give you new insight and passion, love, pain and sorrow to add and give what you may be seeking for your poetry.

How can I learn how to write poetry ?

We Answered:

It's extremely hard for anyone to write a good poem. The best published poets have read hundreds of poems by other writers for every one that they have written themselves. So keep expanding your mind by reading as much poetry as you can.

There are several good books of writing advice for poets, including "The Poetry Home Repair Manual" by Ted Kooser, "A Poetry Handbook" by Mary Oliver, and "The Poet's Companion: A Guide to the Pleasures of Writing Poetry" by Kim Addonizio and Dorianne Laux.

Tyler Said:

How can I put myself into the mindset to write poetry quite quickly?

We Answered:

Lee Lee is incorrect - if you want to write poetry to stick in your bottom drawer and then you alone read it - fine, it doesn't have to make sense to anyone else.
But, most people write poetry in order to communicate - especially in order to communicate emotion.
I am inspired to write poetry by reading what others have written. A!Y Poetry has done this for me oodles of time.
My latest method of writing consists of writing a random phrase...anything which comes into my head....then allowing my brain to find rhyming or echoing sound words which follow (making sense of course - your subconscious mind creates the ideas, but your analytical brain edits and discards.)
Sometimes the opening bit I discard later because it is only when the process gets going that it really kicks in. (See my Granny rap....that's how I wrote it....to me it starts to kick in around the 'majesty, no travesty, pure rhapsody' section.

Vivian Said:

How can I motivate myself to write poetry? Any tips or exercises that I can use?

We Answered:

Simple truths, written in simple ways
unclaimed until you find them
right in front of you,
smiling.

Poetry is everything,
everywhere.
