How often during boot camp will my husband be allowed to write letters home?

We Answered:

About a half hour every night, but as others have suggested, the recruits also need to get there uniforms ironed, lockers squared away, shower and there usually isnt alot of time to write. Weekends will give them more time. But remember, the greatest thing ou can do for him is to send him lots and lots of mail. Nothing is better than getting a letter from a loved one while in boot camp. And DONT make him feel guilty that he isnt writing you much. That would be the worst thing you can do (other than cheating on him of course).

How can i encourage my 4 year old son to learn how to write letters?

We Answered:

The best way is to play games with him at home. Not games you buy, but games you make up. Having him watch you as you write. With the holidays coming up, you probably have extra reasons to write. As you're writing, you can say things like: "Want to help me write a letter to grandpa? Let's write the letter 'd' together."

Writing with a purpose instead of just to complete homework is more motivating and fun for kids. If it's just to perform, they can easily get turned-off to it. Or ask him to decorate a picture with his name (that he writes himself) as the center, to send to auntie as a present.

Kids who learn with a purpose get a reward much larger than that of a good grade. They see that there is a connection between their actions and the people around them, and that is very satisfying.

Also, one more thing to consider with an open mind: maybe he's too young for school yet. Some kids are ready at four, some are not, and they don't become more ready just by making them go. If they're not ready, they'll be insecure for a long time.

It is not too late to pull him out. It's something I recommend talking about with a psychologist (not one for the school as it's in their financial best interest to have high enrollment). If you do consider this route, be sure to investigate the credentials and references for the psychologist. Just as not all teachers are adequate educators, some psychologists are not all they're cracked-up to be.

I didn't enroll my son in school until he was almost 6. He's now top of his class in 8th grade and scores consistantly in the top 1% on nationwide tests. He's a well-adjusted and happy kid. I'm never sorry I let him have those extra 9 months although I could've started him at age 4.

As a high school teacher, I have some students who are still too immature and low-skilled, who struggle to keep up with their classmates, and it's devastating to them. They would've benefited from more time with family and the tender-loving teaching of mom and dad before entering school.

On the other hand, it may be as simple as your spending the extra time with him on his homework. He'll get it eventually, one way or another.

It's great that you're concerned about your son's learning and want to help him. That means more than anything else for a student's long-term success in school. Teachers care about their students but are never as good at educating children as mom and dad are (unless the parents are bad parents, and it sounds like you're great). There are some things that schools cannot do.

Where is a good place to learn how to write letters in binary?

We Answered:

There is an ascii table at http://www.asciitable.com/. Use it to look up the letters you want, and then convert the associated number to binary. It's easiest to convert the octal numbers to binary, because you just turn each octal digit into three binary bits.

0 -> 000
1 -> 001
2 -> 010
3 -> 011
4 -> 100
5 -> 101
6 -> 110
7 -> 111

An ascii capital Z is 132 octal on the table, so that would be

001 011 010

Drop the first bit (which will always be zero) and mash it together to get an eight bit byte.
01011010

Repeat for all letters in your message.
