How To Write Cursive

Fernando Said:

How come students don't know how to write in Cursive anymore?

We Answered:

I think cursive, which was taught to us as a means of writing "formally," is no longer perceived as necessary. When we were in school and had to write essays, reports, etc. by hand, it was appropriate to learn the more formal way of doing so. Nowadays, even young kids turn in their schoolwork largely typed, and in the working world, hardly anything is hand written. Its just a sign of the times, I guess.

Sherri Said:

Do I need to know how to write cursive to get into Special Forces in the Army?

We Answered:

Sorry, this question made me laugh.

Of all of the things you would need to be able to do in order to be accepted into this highly prestigious training program, I don't think writing cursive would be one of them. Military writing is centered around brevity and clarity, and most things of any importance are typed. Your quality of handwriting is only going to really matter to you, when you need to read your own notes.

Wilma Said:

i have a seven year old son and i need to know how can i teach hi to write cursive?

We Answered:

It's usually easier to start early, around age 4. What you want to do now is make sure there's a sensorial aspect to it so it's not just pencil and paper, but also uses other senses to make connections in the brain. You might want to try these materials:

With that, your son can trace the letters with his fingers, feel them, then either trace them in something else (such as a tray of sand) or begin writing them.

When I had to learn the Chinese phonetic system used in Taiwan, I used the sandpaper letters they make for that. It made learning them a lot easier and my writing of them improve a lot. I could actually feel the letter as I worked on it

Good luck and hope that helps.

What are good websites to teach cursive handwriting?

We Answered:

I have been a kinder, first, second and fifth grade teacher. We have great workbook that is used for each grade level. I don't think it is available for the public, but what is important is that the curriculum used the D'Nealian font which is a great print to cursive transition. The letters are slanted and curved.
Check out this website to create your own worksheets
I used to use this website for extra name practice or letter practice when a student/s were not mastering a certain letter/shape.

In addition here is a great website about the advantages in using this method (D'Nealian Handwriting).
