Always try to boil the labs down to what question you are addressing and what introductory information would be necessary to both educate your public and get them excited about your work.

To me this project is all about percent composition/elemental analysis. You could mention how elemental analysis is important in identifying toxic substances in water supplies, how the elemental ratios are important because they define a material (an alloy that is 55%A and 45%B will have different properties than an alloy that is 70%A and 30%B). You could mention how this is an important routine type of analysis for chemistry labs inventing new materials, the list goes on. Find something you're excited about, get some credible references and run with it!
