How To Write A Haiku

Erika Said:

How to write haiku poems? Any tips?

We Answered:

HAIKU POEMS

A Haiku is a traditional Japanese poem about nature. It has a very special pattern made up of seventeen syllables.

It's really quite simples to write a Haiku.

The first line must consist of exactly 5 syllables, line two must have 7 syllables and line three must have 5 syllables. And typically Haiku poems have 3 lines all together. It would look a little something like this.

5 syllables
7 syllables
5 syllables

Here's an example:

Sliding on the ice
Swimming in the cold waters
Catching fish to eat

With syllables:

Slid - ing - on - the - ice (5)
1 2 3 4 5

Swim - ing - in - the - cold - wa -ters (7)
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Catch - ing - fish - to - eat (5)
1 2 3 4 5

Definition of Syllable :

A unit of spoken language consisting of a single uninterrupted sound formed by a vowel, diphthong, or syllabic consonant alone, or by any of these sounds preceded, followed, or surrounded by one or more consonants.

Stephen Said:

How would I write a haiku expressing my understanding of the term "critical thinking"?

We Answered:

Here is the definition of critical thinking out of criticalthinking.org - now choose your words and write it yourself!
Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.

It entails the examination of those structures or elements of thought implicit in all reasoning: purpose, problem, or question-at-issue; assumptions; concepts; empirical grounding; reasoning leading to conclusions; implications and consequences; objections from alternative viewpoints; and frame of reference. Critical thinking — in being responsive to variable subject matter, issues, and purposes — is incorporated in a family of interwoven modes of thinking, among them: scientific thinking, mathematical thinking, historical thinking, anthropological thinking, economic thinking, moral thinking, and philosophical thinking.

Come on you can do it - give it a go!
GOOD LUCK!

Mattie Said:

What are syllables and how do I write a haiku?

We Answered:

The metrical pattern of Haiku

Haiku-poems consist of respectively 5, 7 and 5 syllables in three units. In Japanese, this convention is a must, but in English, which has variation in the length of syllables, this can sometimes be difficult.
