Grant Proposal Writing

Donna Said:

Help on writing a grant proposal?

We Answered:

Before you think of how to write this grant proposal, find first a foundation who might be able to help you. It will not be easy and you will have to JUSTIFY why they need to support a redecorating project. Are there studies that show that cancer patients react better to a light blue room? Is there any impact at all in their recovery if you change the room?

The key to remember when writing a grant proposal is you have to CLEARLY demonstrate the need for the money. Think about this first, and then find possible funding sources.

If you are operating a non-profit organization, Your best bet is to seek for private grants or grants from private foundations.

The best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.

If you want to try federal sources, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants.

CFDA has several ways to search for grants. I suggest you search by beneficiary and select Private Non Profit Organization and you can find listings of grants available http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALO…

The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.

When writing a grant proposal, what should you put on the timeline and what are Researcher Qualifications?

We Answered:

The time-line is your high-level schedule fro completing the project. The qualifications are what make you qualified to carry out this project. What other research have you done? What other similar projects have you led or assisted?

Bernard Said:

What is the difference between grant writing and proposal writing?

We Answered:

A grant writer is asking for something.

A proposal writer is offering something.

While they are different, the "fundamentals" of writing them are the same.

A grant is written asking for funding for a project. It includes information about your organization and a description of what you plan to do with the money should you be given it. Grant writing is generally a function of non-profit charitable organizations.

A proposal is written suggesting your company will provide some service to an individal or other company. It includes information about your organization, what you intend to offer and what you expect in exchange. Proposal writing is usually a function of private sector businesses.

Oscar Said:

How to start writing a grant proposal.?

We Answered:

Your proposal should follow a good format, and be easy to read and navigate. I would recommend the following format:

I. Title Page (Proposal Name, author, organization, date)

II. Table of Contents

III. Executive Summary (short and sweet, no more than one page summary of the entire project/proposal)

IV. Introduction

V. Situation Analysis

VI. Description of the Project/Research

VII. Deliverables

IIX. Budget

IX. Appendix (letters of support, research, etc.)

Oscar Said:

Why is grant and proposal writing important to the research endeavor?

We Answered:

Because you have to prove to someone with money that it is worthwhile for them to fund it.
