Expository Writing Prompts

Byron Said:

The hook of a writing prompt?

We Answered:

You could either start with a:

-personal story
-a question (like, "Have you ever tried to do something with your eyes closed? Well, as hard as it may seem, blind people have many ways they get through everyday tasks.")
-A famous quote

Dora Said:

how do you begin an intro to an expository writing prompt?

We Answered:

Well this into sounds fine.

Judy Said:

Please provide me tips on the fundamentals of expository writing

We Answered:

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Expository writing is meant to inform the reader, rather than entertain or persuade him, so you must report, explain, or describe something.

In the first paragraph, be sure to state your topic clearly. Start off with a good "grabber," then give several examples or explanations, and finish up with a sentence that merges into your next section.

The next two or three paragraphs (the body of your essay) expand on the points you mentioned in the intro. This is the important part! You have to support or explain the broad statements you made to begin with. This section is key to a good grade: you have to back up your premise, show off your fabulous vocabulary, etc. while being as creative as possible.

Finish up with a concluding paragraph that states the topic again, in different words from the introduction, and summarizes your points from the body. Wrap it all up in a final concluding sentence, which should have some sparkle.

Here are some key points from a Florida school advising students how to ace their state writing test (http://www.sbac.edu/~idylwild/writingtip…
*Keep to the topic. Do not stray or go off on a tangent.
*Use great vocabulary. You want to show that you have a good command of words that is above and beyond what the average student your age knows.
*Organize yourself well. Never make a statement that you do not back up or support. Develop that support well.
*Use transitions such as first, second, third, next, before or after, and finally.

Expository writing actually is easier than some other types because you don't have to make things up completely out of your imagination. Good luck to you!

iM TAKiN FCAT WRiTEz TOMOROW!! iM A 10TH GRADER (2010 WOOT WOOT LOL) AND i KNO HOW HARD iT iS TO GET A 6 BUT MY ENGLiSH TEACHER GAVE US A 10 GRADE FCAT WRiTiNG RUBRiC AND iN ORDER TO GET A 6 (WHiCH iS THE HiGHEST POSSiBLY GRADE), ACCORDiN TO THE RUBRiC,

FOCUS- FOCUSED AND REFLECTS INSIGHT INTO THE WRITING SITUATION

ORGANIZATION- ORGANIZATIONAL PATTER PROVIDES FOR A LOGIVAL PROGREESION OF IDEAS. EFFECTIVE USE OF TRANSITIONAL DEVICES CONTRIBUTES TO A SENSE OF COMPLETENESS.

SUPPORT- SUBSTANTIAL, SPECIFIC, RELEVANT, CONCRETE. SHOWS COMMITMENT TO AND INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SUBJECT. MAY USE CREATIVE WRITING STRATEGIES. MATURE COMMAND OF LANGUAGE WITH FRESHNESS OF EXPRESSION. VARIATION IN SENTENCE STRUCTURE.

CONVENTIONS- FEW, IF ANY CONVENTION ERRORS IN MECHANICS, USAGE, PUNCTUATION, AND SPELLING

BASICALLY, YOU MUST STAY ON TOPIC AND HAVE ALOT OF FOCUS!! MY TEACHER TAUGHT ME THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOOD GRABBER (TO CATCH THE READERz ATTENTiON) A GOOD THESiS STATEMENT AND YOUR THREE REASONS (WHiCH IS YOUR BODY) AND USE E.E.P.S IN ALL 3 PARAGRAPHS OF THE BODY.

E- EXPLAIN
E- EXAMPLE
P- PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
S- SOMEONE ELSE'S EXPERIENCE

ALSO, VOCABULARY IS AN IMPORTANT PART!

AND NEVER USE "iN CONCLUSION..." FOR YOUR LAST CONCLUDiNG PARAGRAPH
TRY "ALL iN ALL" OR "iN SUMMATiON" THOSE ARE LEVEL 6 VOCAB.

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF US!!

UC prompts- expository essay or story?

We Answered:

It should sound like you talking to an adult and explaining why you should go to college.

Stacy Said:

i need some help with writing an essay that is expository/persuasive writing?

We Answered:

I was going through the same thing a couple weeks back and couldn't find out any sites that helped much. I took a trip down to the library and ended up getting multiple books to get a better perspective on it and it really helped. I went from a 58% to a 76% mainly because I went back over my old essay and did everything in my power to correct it and make it betterand learn fropm the mistakes. The only way you'll get better is by writing more!
