I need an example of expository writing note taking?

We Answered:

Lucky for you, wikipedia can tell you what the professor is talking about when he speaks this "cornell note taking" gibberish. Here's a quote... "The student divides the paper into two columns: the note-taking column (usually on the right) is twice the size of the key word column (on the left). The student should leave five to six lines, or about two inches, at the bottom of the page. Notes from a lecture or textbook are written in the note-taking column; notes usually consist of the main ideas of the text or lecture, and long ideas are paraphrased." Good luck.

I've been told that it is very bad form to use expository writing in fiction?

We Answered:

Expository writing means telling or explaining something to the reader. Good fiction shows what is happening rather than tells. Showing means writing what the characters are doing, saying, thinking, and feeling so that the reader can experience it along with the characters. Telling means narrating or interpreting all this for the reader. Showing is writing a scene. Telling is writing a summary.

Here's an example of telling: Ann was angry. She yelled at her father and told him not to run her life.

Here's an example of showing: Ann tightened her hands into fists at her sides. Why did her father think he could run Ann's life? "You should have asked me first," she said through her clenched teeth.

The second example evokes a visual and emotional image in the readers mind while the first example gets the main idea across but in a flat, vague way. The second example never mentions that Ann is angry, but we know very well that she is. The first example is a summary, an explanation, or an interpretation of what happened. The second is writing what happened, writing a scene.

Sometimes expository writing is necessary in fiction to move the plot along faster or to explain something quickly without dwelling on it. However, good fiction relies chiefly on showing and not telling.
