Creative Writing For Kids

Jimmie Said:

What grade to children start creative writing?

We Answered:

If you want them to physically WRITE stories, then 3rd grade is OK. However, you can start as young as kindergarten by having them tell stories into a tape recorder and then transcribing them.

Curtis Said:

i want to design a plan for 7 day workshop for creative writing for kids 9-10. Each day 1.5 hrs for 7 days.?

We Answered:

get them to a story. make them plan it out, make an outline, then write it. then make htem edit their stories, then get their friends to edit them, and then edit, and edit and edit.

also, you should have hte first day be about elements of creative writing and stuff. make them incorporate these elements into their writing and yeah..

then the kids who are proud of their stories coudl do five minute presentations on ht elast day.

good luck

What's a good book to teach kids creative writing?

We Answered:

When I was 11, people were always giving me books on writing, so I was reading Steven King's "On Writing", I remember, plus a host of books by authors who were popular so long ago that no one remembers their names any more. But the one that I think was most legitimately useful, plus fun and age appropriate, was "Writing Magic" by Gail Carson Levine. Even though it was written directly before Levine started writing for *very* young children, it's not written in that young style, but rather more like all of her other books up to that point-- ageless and an easy read. It has tips, surveys, and best of alll, the end of each chapter is a list of "assignments" that readers can/should do to utilise the techniques she's talked about. I loved it when I was 11, I loved her books when I was younger, and my 40-something stepmother just read it, and she loved it too, so I'd say it's appropriate for all ages!

How to start grade 3 kid on creative writing?

We Answered:

One of the best ways to teach creative writing to children of any age is to use the 6 + 1 Traits model. You can learn about this model by reading one of the complete guides (depending on your child's level) by Ruth Culham.

Basically, the model involves teaching children about the six plus one traits of good writing (ideas, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, voice, conventions, and presentation) and using their knowledge of these traits to improve their writing.

I have never seen a better or more engaging way to teach writing to children.

You can find the book at any online bookstore by searching for "6 traits."

Creative Writing...?

We Answered:

Laule has the right idea. You need to do a lot of back story for yourself, background stuff that won't appear in the real story, but that will shape it.

You might want to figure out what happens to -one- of the children, especially, in detail. Like a camera -- you're going to have one of the three in tight focus, in the foreground. The other two are going to be less clear, in the mid-distance. And all the kids at the party will be kind of blurry, especially so because it's a very short story -- 5 pages is only about 1,250 words.

You might want to start 'way in to the story, with a line like, "The policeman was a hottie." (You can have that one for free; I give it to you!) Then the real story would be describing why the police wound up at the house, with a few paragraphs at the end that take place after they come.

In a story this short, one of the pitfalls is to try to show too much happening. You need to show, not tell, the important stuff, but you probably need to get all the important stuff into one day or less, with the background (marriage camp, etc) into a few paragraphs, or a sentence here and a sentence there.

These are not rules, just thoughts that might (or might not) be helpful.
