Sprung from creative writing exercises?

We Answered:

Can you offer more details?

If the exercise was simply the instruction to write about some specific topic or in a specific style or manner, then there's no source to credit. The writing is yours. You can do anything you want to with it.

In fact, I'm having difficulty coming up with an exercise in which there *would* be a source to credit, unless you were given the first paragraph of a story, which you were supposed to continue. In this case, you could either rewrite the first paragraph in your own voice and with your own words, or seek permission from the owner of the copyright for that paragraph to publish it. You should then include a line somewhere to this effect: "The first paragraph of this work copyright 2007 Writing Exercises Inc. Used by permission."

But anything you write belongs to you. Ideas cannot be copyrighted.
