Can anyone tel me where I can find free online creative writing courses?

We Answered:

I've been looking for classes too. So far, the best bet seems to be to check your area colleges and universities. A lot of times they will have classes they consider to be "personal enrichment" and will include creative writing in that. In my area the only ones I have found so far have been classes that are part of a degree so good luck with your search.

Which Universities in Canada offer the best creative writing courses?

We Answered:

To my knowledge, the only schools that even offer creative writing as a major are U of T, York and Western (I know because my sister wanted to study this - she choose something else though after deciding it wasn't worth the money). Most schools offer classes in creative writing, but don't offer it as a major or an actual degree program or most schools just consider creative writing as part of the english department so that even if you want to do creative writing, your degree program/major will be considered english.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend doing creative writing as your major. Creative writing isn't really something you need to spend thousands of dollars to get a degree in - you can do it on your own time, or just take a few electives in creative writing, or do writing workshops etc on the weekends. There are even creative writing camps/retreats you can go to in the summer for a week or so and take workships, get your writing edited by other writers, etc. You're better off to major in journalism or at least in english lit, so that you gain the theoretical knowledge to back up your creativity and learn properly about genre, literary techniques, literary criticism, figurative language, etc. Good luck!
