I have been on a creative writing course and the sort of things we did was to talk about where you could get ideas for stories from - two good ideas are from snatches of overheard conversations and from dreams.

We had to try writing the same story from different points of view and read examples of published writing.

We also did an exercise in identifying the main plot points in fims etc.

There's a lot of interaction and you might be asked to read out what you have written.

I enjoyed the course a lot.

I'm sure all courses are different, but I hope this gives you some idea

EDIT It wasn't all about fiction, BTW, we also talked about biography and travel writing

You can do this yourself at home. Start with the library or a bookseller. There are thousands of books that will teach you what you need to know. Practice is the main thing. Practice everyday, everyday, everyday and you will improve. Read the work of other writers and let your mind absorb their work. Then, practice more. There are classes you can take online. Search for those. Then do some reading and practicing.

Are you in the UK? Because if you are, you can do it via Open University courses. I did one recently and it was really good. I got lots of support and good results at the end. It's cheaper and can be done straight from home :)
