Public writing is informal writing. Therefore, you don't have to follow proper grammar and rules as you normally would. You can make it more personal by adding shortcuts to words and using caps when they are not needed ect.

However, academic writing is the complete opposite. In academic writing you have to express your thoughts in correct grammar, it usually has to follow some sort of format so you can't personalize it. Diction is very important compared to informal writing when it usually wouldn't be used.

There's a time and place for both of these type of writing.

The cliche in A, "the color drained from his face," is just a basic description of what happens to the color of his face. Although it is not flat out saying "his face turned white," it is almost the same.
The cliche in B, "white as a sheet," is just a simile, and is by no means complecated at all, it is just a simple comparison of color. Had the simile been more elaborate, then it could heave been the correct answer.
The cliche in D, "blew it," is an informal phrase which wouldn't be used in academic essay writing to begin with.

Thus, the cliche in C, "out of the frying pan and into the fire," seem like it would be the best choice. This is because it doesn't flat out state what happened. The metaphoric use of fire and heat to represent the severity of a bad situation is the most in-depth and complex literary tool which is used in any of the 4 options.
