Writing History Essays

Susan Said:

I am writing a history essay and need help. I don't know how to cite in my paper or how to do a conclusion.

We Answered:

When i was in High School, I used the Citation Machine for citing things, simply gather all your reference information.

As for as conclusions, make sure you wrap up the main points of the paper (usually seperated by paragraph), and tie back into your original thesis statement. I'd usually end the paper with something for the reader to think about after all that was taken care of. It'll make it stick out in the readers mind!

Good luck!

When writing history essays, is it better to write it chronologically or by relevance?

We Answered:

You should center your essay on your topic, not the chronological order. Here are some examples:)

I need some help on writing AP US history essays?

We Answered:

in pretty much every essay question you will have to talk about economic, social, and religious factors. For each of those topics you should have 3, if not more, supporting facts. so altogether 9 or more different supports, and then elaborate on those. make sure you DO NOT contradict yourself, thats the worse. And try to leave out fillers, they want the facts. hope this helps!

tips for writing history essays?

We Answered:

Here is what I typically do for essays. (I really hate the long ones though...). This format can change depending on whether you are writing an essay (independent) , or an essay supporting or disputing something (given topic).

1. research

2. identify the topic that most interests or relates to you (this can be hard if you are given a topic, or if you don't care at all). This will make it go much easier and you will generally be able to give a stronger support.

3. split up your essay into different parts (like an outline). For example (using a Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain example): introduction of topic (Why Chamberlain's charge on little round top is the turning point of the civil war), history of topic (battle of Gettysburg), information on topic (many opportunities here(biography, his position was the end of the union line and his company was the last defense, why little round top was so important, confederate movements, etc.)), etc., until the conclusion (basically restating the introduction(Chamberlain's charge down little round top was the turning point of the civil war, due to the fact that it caused the confederates to retreat, and was the first major defeat they suffered...)

4. Fill in each part with information (if you need to have a long essay, assign a certain length to each part. For example, if you need 3 pages, and have 8 parts, give each part 1/2 page (and 1/4 to the intro and conclusion)

5. Proofread many times

6. Turn in final copy and await your grade.

This is a basic outline of an essay, and I may have left out some things, but that is the main idea.

Additional Tips:

Find as many citations as possible (as well as from many different sources like books, online, encyclopedias, etc.)and include them in a works cited page, even if you barely used them.

use word combinations that are long to help take up space if you have a page requirement, and short words for a word requirement.

HOWEVER, ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST AND DON'T USE THESE TIPS UNLESS AS A LAST RESORT.

I know this is probably confusing, but I hope that this helps and that you do well on your next essay.

P.S. Always give credit where credit is due. Cite your sources or it can be counted as plagiarism, which is a federal offense I believe.
