Writing Good Essay

Jacqueline Said:

What are some good strategies for writing the SAT essay? Please HELP!?

We Answered:

I take a SAT writing class and my teacher told our class not to write 5 paragraph essays for the SAT Essay section. What the people want are four paragraph essays. Intro, two examples, and then a closing. 5 Paragraphs will not let you finish in time. If you want a ten, you need to have decent amount of vocabulary and structure. Also, neatness and grammar counts. As for the examples, they must be from literatures or historical figures or events. DO NOT USE 1st person narratives. Think of the people reading your essays... They really do not care about your personal life because they will think it is BS. Writing about a personal life can be sad, but they will just not care at all and will give you a 5. Good books that deal with MANY MANY examples that can counter the SAT question are The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Jane Eyre. The reason why your teacher forces you to read these books in school is because he or she wants you to use them for future essays.
Use your time wisely don't waste anytime. The first 3-5 minutes, you brainstorm and think of the two examples. Or, you can do this while writing your introduction.

Think about the soldiers who are sacrificing their lives, the child who has sung when people have thought that she could never even speak, or the pilot who safely landed his plane in the Hudson River in New York./

Tips on writing a good essay for English Lit.?

We Answered:

You can start your intro talking about the different concerns and themes each poem raises; the similarities and differences in what they are about and then pick out poetic devices which are found in both poems and briefly with one or two words describe them, e.g disturbing imagery, expressive diction, etc...

Then for the main part of your essay split it up into paragraphs, one for structure and verse, one for the tone and punctuation and one for the poetic devices. Talk about the different and similar ways all these things are used within the poems and how their impacts are similar/different, remember to use some quotes!

Conclusion, basically rounding up the impact the poems had on you as a result of certain features of the poem, talk about the messages conveyed in these poems and finally which poem you think is more successful in delivering a stronger message and why (quickly relate back to techniques)

....well thats what I can remember! good luck!
