Writing Essays Tips

Anyone have tips for writing essays?

We Answered:

Read your essay out loud. It's easier to catch any mistakes you've made, and you can find run-on sentences.

Have a friend or parent read your essay. Don't give them the prompt. Ask them to tell you what the point of your essay was, what they took from it. If they are on target, you've done it. If not, then re-write and focus on clarity.

If you have trouble, the easiest method is the 5 paragraph method. Take whatever topic you are writing on, divide it into 3 subsections, and write one paragraph for each section. Put an intro. paragraph telling what the main topic is and why you divided it up, and a concluding paragraph that explains why all three things have to do with the main one.
Example:
Paragraph 1- explain main topic and divide up into three sub-topics (like if your topic is writing styles, have your sub-sections be 1. grammer, 2. form, 3. spelling)

Paragraph 2- explain first sub-topic in about 3 sentences, and 1 sentence to say why it relates to main topic

Paragraph 3- explain second sub-topic in about 3 sentences, and 1 sentence to say why it relates to main topic

Paragraph 4- explain third sub-topic in about 3 sentences, and 1 sentence to say why it relates to main topic

Paragraph 5- wrap up and say why all three topics are related.
