Writing Essays For College

Darren Said:

Any advice for writing college essays?

We Answered:

Looks like the question is asking you to describe a typical day of yours from different perspectives.

1) Imagine that you are your teacher, whomever she/he is. How do you think she perceives you (the 'student' you) on a typical day? what do you you do in class, what kind of person do you seem to be like? (as far as the teacher can see). Are you noisy / quiet / attentive / distracted / fun / grouchy, etc. Do you seem to be generally happy or unhappy?
2) Now imagine someone else who meets you that day, what kind of impression might they have of you? Describe it. Maybe its someone who works in a store you visit, or a librarian, or just someone who accidentally bumps into you.
3) Now describe yourself as you imagine yourself - the typical day through your own eyes (the mirror).

If you feel clever about this, you could weave those different perspectives into one story, covering a day in your life - every paragraph or so, jump between being the teacher, the stranger and yourself, to create a kind of comparison of the different ways people can see the same person.

Hope that helps.

Writing college admissions essays?

Most college want a college essay. It can be written about anything. My daughter wrote about being a peer tutor. Her friend wrote about her travels outside of the US, another about having an autistic brother.
Your local public library will have a lot of information about colleges. Including how to apply, college essays and financial aid.

Is it too early to write college essays?

We Answered:

If you are motivated enough, definitely get started on writing your essays. It's an extremely long process and you will thank yourself if you pace it correctly. Colleges will typically keep the same essay questions from year to year and but they definitely change occasionally, so make sure you find the updated application (which usually will come out aroung August or September later this year) to ensure you are writing what the school wants you to write. Also, make sure you look out for varying application pieces/essays for different sub-institutions within the schools. For instance, when applying to Cornell University, you apply to a specific school (A&S, Agriculture, Art/Architecture, Environmental etc), which all have different essay topics.

I would start by working on the Common Application (https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/defa… Most schools accept this application accompanied by a supplement for the specific school. The Common Application requires a big essay that will be submitted to all schools you apply to (so it's pretty important) plus a small paragraph about an extracurricular or work experience. The topics you can choose from for your big essay are in this file of page 5 https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/docs…
Although you cannot make your own account until they update the forms for 2010-2011 on Aug. 1, this information basically does not change, and you can really start writing and working now.

Good luck.
