As regards applying for admissions to a college or university, and unless there is a rule of thumb about this, which is agreed-to by all admissions professionals, I would suggest that you speak with an admissions advisor and see what she or he says of this.

In itself I think that it would be a bold and daring go of it; but risky, too. Of course, if you were to indeed consort with an admissions counselor, the fresh and impulsive fire you need would seem to be dampened without instead doing the raw attempt first. Of course, again, this may already have occurred: such an attempt requires that you 'own' what you say; and thus you have already shown some measure of doubt: you asked first, whereas perhaps you were better to ask afterward.

Personally, I'm with you. I think it's indicative of a need to translate your own work. If used correctly, you first presented some issue or fact in too complex a manner, then felt the need to reiterate it via "basically". So write it more understandably in the first place, and eliminate the embarrassing textual flags!
