Writing A Synthesis Essay

Irene Said:

writing a synthesis essay:does this make sense?

We Answered:

You're instincts are right, it doesn't make sense. The only place two articles can harmonize would be in your own brain. I like what you're going for though. I would state what the combined opinion is, then go into discussing how each article illustrates that point.

We Answered:

NO, you do your OWN homework.

This is not a homework site, it can be used if you are stumped on ONE question, or need help getting STARTED but no one here is going to write your essay.

Duh.

Wilma Said:

What is the best way of writing a synthesis essay, while including 2 different texts?

We Answered:

Make sure you do:

A brief introduction to the two texts; who the authors are, and a summary of the texts.

A paragraph about the first text.

A paragraph about the second text.

A comparison of the two, and a conclusion. How are the texts similar? How do they differ? Which text is more effective, and why is the other less so? Or are they both effective, just in different ways? Explain it.

Explore the effect of the language, sentence structure, and punctuation. Explore the writers' techniques, which may be rhetoric or figurative if it's creative texts.

Explore the themes, how the text implies the writers' aims/opinions, if it's a story. Did the writer want the readers' views on any matters to change after reading their piece?

Gladys Said:

i have to write a synthesis essay about these two poems Emily Dickinson I heard a fly buzz-when I died &?

We Answered:

The basic idea you need to be working with is that Donne's poem is a rejection of death. Donne says that death isn't something we need to fear, and anyway Christians don't really die - so death isn't something Donne is going to deal with.

Emily Dickinson on the other hand writes a poem which is an acceptance of death. Emily writes what dying is like, she doesn't seem afraid of it - more interested really.

Donne - a Christian - seems to fear death. Dickinson - an atheist - seems comfortable with the idea of dying.

Why do you suppose that is?

(To turn this into an essay, obviously you will need to give examples from the poems of the first two points. This isn't hard to do).

Joann Said:

What structure do you use when writing a synthesis essay?

We Answered:

Present the first idea (thesis)

Present the opposite idea (anti0thesis)

Present and idea that combines the two (synthesis)

Discuss It!
