Writing A College Application Essay

Would it be a good idea if I wrote a college application essay about my passion of the literary arts?We Answered:
Ask your counselor. :/George Said:
Writing college application essay/personal statement in third person? A big no-no?We Answered:
I teach at a university and I have to say that this is a HUGE mistake. Believe me, we get many "gimmick" personal statements and, I'm sorry to say, this kind of cliche gets very boring very quickly. The end result could very well be rejection not because you weren't a qualified applicant but because your PS turned off the admissions committee. While I can't speak for everyone or every university, I would never advise any of my students to try this. It is all about the content of your essay, not the style.Good luck.

I'm having trouble writing my college application essay? We Answered:
Make it your own.If your paper is "unique," it is probably as "unique" as everybody else's paper. On the other hand, if it is basic, they'll probably dismiss it because there is no character in a standard-format paper.
Base the paper on everything about yourself. (Nothing too radical, of course - changing fonts and colors and stuff is a bit on the "NO" side...) If you are a focused person, do your paper in chronological order; if you are a dreamer, do it in climactic order. If the death in your family made you a different person, or caused you to realize some inevitability that would make you want to do everything you could for society, then hey, write it. Put a little of yourself into the paper.
And make about 3 copies. If the school of your choice doesn't accept a true-to-form from-the-heart paper (that follows grammatical rules), then another one might. You'll probably get along better at the school that accepts your paper doing it this way as well, since the foundations of acceptance and excellence will likely be similar to yours on a psychological level.

I need help writing a college application essay!?We Answered:
The best way to write a college essay, in my opinion, is to tell a story. It sounds like you have a lot of potential experiences that you could use to explain to the admissions office why you're interested in psychology. Rather than try to go into all of it at once, brainstorm and pick a single moment in time that shows how psychology affects your life. For example (I don't know your life, so these are plucked out of the air), when you realized you had an eating disorder, an event that was affected (positively or negatively) by your brother's bipolar disorder, etc. I would avoid an attempt to summarize more than one event, because that makes your essay cluttered. After telling your story, finish the essay by explaining why that makes you want to go into psychology, and specifically at that school.
If possible, have at least one person read over your essay before you send it in. English teachers are wonderful resources, but if you don't feel comfortable with anyone reading it (even in an online setting), read it over yourself a few times--out loud.
