It needs to be "capturing" to the audience. Most people hate reading something at the start that's thoroughly boring and unnattractive. Try to start off with a relavant story or incident. But be careful; your intro MUST relate to your topic.

Body:

Emphasize your MAIN point through plenty of examples, good recoures, and reinstating your thesis. Your audience NEEDS to know all the facts and details, no matter how long the paper is. Keep in mind though, that a GOOD essay notices an audience is present and everything is explained because they don't know anything about your topic.

Conclusion:

It should STRONGLY reinforce your main thesis. Try to raise questions that gets your audience thinking? Make them believe that whatever your talking about is legit.

I don't think you need to write an essay for Middlesex as part of their application. When you interview they will ask you to write an essay there. They also want a graded essay. Check their application. My information is a few years old, and they might have changed their process.

When writing an application essay, the most important thing is to give the reader another dimension about you -- something that would not be known from your other application materials. Of course, it would be good to incorporate positive attributes that you have. The second thing is to stand out from other applicants, so that your essay is memorable.

Given the list of your ec's above, why not pick something that happened with one of the ec's. You can write about a character-forming event. Have you ever pushed yourself to excel and succeeded or failed? Think about something that changed you, and how you were changed. Don't write about all the activities you do because they should be listed on the application.

Sounds like my favorite subject: "Sociology."
Start there. Find a sociology textbook at the library b/c sociology is the study of different society's and the advantages and disadvantages of being in said society.
I actually am not familiar with pride and prejudice, but Romeo and Juliet had an obvious difference in society. There was the rich (juliet) and the poor (romeo) and there was such a stereo-type in society about each party that neither families wanted either to be together.
I hope this makes sense or helps you get ideas, but start with Sociology. Its a sure way to a great paper.
