Write College Essay

Ricky Said:

Can someone help me write a college essay?

We Answered:

I definitely think you should have a professional look at your essay. I got into a great college and my first choice for graduate school, and have tried out a couple of professional editing services over the past few years. I figured other people are using them, and if I didn't I would get left behind.

Anyway, these are the companies I have tried:

www.essayedge.com
The biggest company and does generally a good job. I've had two essays edited by them, and they were both a little better after.

www.Harvardsqessays.com
A friend recommended them to me since all of their editors have a degree from Harvard. I've sent my last three essays to them. They were A LOT better afterwards, with like lots of eloquent wording.

www.editing-services.org
I used them for one scholarship essay last year and it was was really horrible. They only changed a few grammatical things and even made some mistakes.

Anyway, good luck with your essay!

How to write a college essay by answering your own question?

We Answered:

Pretend you're writing a question here. Then pretend you've come along and are answering it! Not a very difficult exercise, I responded to just such a question yesterday. Conventional essay form will do, no reason to reinvent the wheel (though you may want to avoid cliches, lol). And by all means, use the word "I" when you're talking about yourself! Or whatever pronouns are appropriate.

"High school students stand on the border between childhood and adulthood. The decisions that we make today will affect us for many years to come."

"Since I was a child, I've been fascinated by things that blink. Calculators, computers, Christmas lights."

"The reasons applicants express a preference for one school over another may seem idiosyncratic, even puzzling. Students may base their choices on the political atmosphere at a campus, or the number of smokers, or other factors that seem immaterial to the education they hope to receive. Yet in speaking to adults about their college choices, I have found that most of them are satisfied with the choice they made. Why is this? Is it that most schools are good, and, given a reasonable academic match, students will have a satisfying experience anywhere? Or are there important intangibles in the college experience, differences of atmosphere and vision and affinity that aren't reflected in dry statistics like average SAT scores or the percentage of graduates who earn PhD's?"

Can I write my college essay on being vegetarian?

We Answered:

Ummmm. Unless it's something like unique to you and there is some reason you HAVE to be a vegetarian I would say not a good idea. I don't know if it's relevant. Admission folks want to see something you've had to overcome, excel at, a life experience that made you WHO you are, not what you choose to eat.

What should I write my college essay about?

We Answered:

A college essay is the opportunity for you to introduce yourself to the admittance board of the university that you are applying to.

So, I would do just that.

I would write about your love of school and how excited you are about attending their school. I would talk of the activities you participated in during H.S. The relationships you developed with teachers and what you hope to bring to their school.

If you volunteer I would note that in the essay. I would stress what you wish to become and how that will help you and your community. What opportunities will you have once you get a degree from the college and how will that help other people?

For instance getting into nursing, how you hope to become an oncology nurse because you had a relative that had cancer and you see how people suffering from cancer is afraid and you want to help them beat cancer and ease their fears. (just an example).

Mine was entrepreneurship and how I wanted to give back to the community.

So it is what you hope to accomplish with your degree. What kind of person will that make you?

Also see what having you as a student will enrich the university? I applied as an "Older" student to the School of Business so what I brought to the university is my age and ethnic group. So, it gave the college something that they were lacking.

You need to use all the angles to get yourself admitted. The more they see of you the better the chances of getting into the school by writing a great essay.

Once you have it written down, take it to your counselor at H.S. to have them look at it. Then rewrite it again.

Read it out loud.

Good luck, hope I gave some ideas you could use.

How do I write this college essay?

We Answered:

I would recommend:

1) Passionate hook - about yourself
2) Continue to your background in the field
3) Specific classes by title aka Marketing units/English units/Whatever
4) Related extracurricular activities (especially if they hint at some personal quality you want to convey)
5) Any publications or other professional accomplishments in the field (perhaps conference presentations or public readings
6) Explanations about problems in your academic background (if needed)
7) THE MAIN BIT - Why you have chosen this college.

TIPS:
* For the opening hook - about yourself - here is an example:

"When I was eleven, my great-aunt Gretchen passed away and left me something that changed my life: a library of about five thousand books. Some of my best days were spent arranging and reading her books. Since then, I have wanted to be a librarian."

It is clear - It is direct - and they will remember your application from 100 other applicants.

* Meticulous proofreading is required. The statement should be completely error-free.
* Be specific - Avoid clichés and vague generalisations. If you are talking about your strengths provide examples of achievements where you have demonstrated such strengths. At the same time don’t just a reel off a string of accomplishments. It’s better to focus on a couple of successes which you think are really important and write about them in detail, explaining how you overcame challenges and what you learnt from the experience.
* Do not go off topic.
* Be honest.

Good luck! :)
