Casey Said:

How do I find out what the prompt is for my college application essay?

We Answered:

Go to Temple's website and go to "How to Apply" or some kind of page like that and you should be able to find requirements. In there, they will 99% all the time tell you your requirements for an essay and if you have to respond to one of their own given prompts. If they don't give you a prompt, best way to go is to write an essay on how you've come to learn your place in life and basically include a lot of things like diversity and hardship. I just wrote mine and got accepted to the University of Colorado. You will be fine.

Rick Said:

In a university essay, when quoting a title of something, how do you format it?

We Answered:

It is dependent upon the style used by the discipline.

The answer is different for each of the major styles used - MLA, APA and CBE. If this is for a composition class taught within the English Dept it will be MLA style.

First, review the course syllabus and determine the style you were directed to folllow.

Next, on-line go to the Purdue OWL which provides a great summary on each of the major styles, or go to the library and check out Brown & Little's Guide to Grammar.

How do I refer to a book in the text of a university essay (in England)?

We Answered:

Mr. Smith, in his book, 'Minds of Death' expressed the importants of the human mind when he said that, 'blablablalblabla....' Since it's an essay, it may be better to 'paraphrase the citations except if the University handbook require's you to include a footnote.

Since you are using only one source and you need to cite the source simultaneously. Use the folling methods also: Thus;

1. Mr. Smith, Minds of Death, Name of Publisher, City and country of Publication, Year of Publication and page number. Eg. P. 12.

2. Op. Cit, P. 16.
3. Ibid. P.16
4. Ibid P.19
5. Etc.
I wish you the best.

Whats the difference between a high-school and university essay?

We Answered:

University level essays are analysis based just like high school essays. You will be expected to turn out better researched, referenced and analysed essays though. Say you read two books for a high school essay, that will be about ten at university. Also, your essays should be more 'profound' they should show a clear understanding of the topic and demonstrate that you are generating your own original theories. At high school, every essay in a class with the same question will be very similar, they will be based on the same text(s) and the analysis and conclusions will be very similar. University essays should be much more individual.
