Topic For Essay Writing

Howard Said:

A topic for my argumentative essay--something based on literature or writing?

We Answered:

One "argument" within fictional literature that always fascinates and puzzles me is the choice of PERSPECTIVE by the writer.

I'm talking about the age-old debate that every writer must have with him/herself from the very first paragraph onward: -

[a] Do I write this book from 1st Person perspective ... i.e. as if I the writer am my hero / heroine, and so can express my own character's feelings and thoughts with 100% certainty ... but can only surmise what the other characters may be thinking and feeling?
Or,
[b] Do I write this book from an omniscient god-like 3rd Person perspective ... i.e. I the writer know and can express with 100% what every character is thinking and feeling at all times?
Or,
[c] Do I switch the perspective, chapter-by-chapter, as the plot develops: telling the beginning of my story from one character's perspective; then, in the next chapter, continuing the story from another character's perspective; and so on, chapter-by-chapter?

There are pros and cons for each approach, and I think that you could write a fine argumentative essay giving your opinions (and quoting and analyzing examples from books you have read if you have difficulty stretching to 1000 words).

My opinion (for what it is worth) is that [b] above, the omniscient 3rd Person perspective is the easiest approach for a writer to take. But that it is also usually the least satisfying for a reader, because it banishes that measure of uncertainty that is key to creating interesting tension between characters.

What is a better topic for writing an essay?

We Answered:

The better one is the one you know more about and can prove with specific examples. Come up with an outline for both essays and see about which one you have more to say. A way to make it easier is to turn each "theme" into a thesis statement that you'll try to prove. Just thinking about power and control is too broad. Try to prove something about it in each of the works. Or the same with rebellion - try to come up with something you're trying to prove or say about rebellion. Doing so will identify which one you should write about.

Is writing how our world has a good chance of ending in 2012 a good topic for a persuasive essay?

We Answered:

yeah, i heard about that. it is pretty scary. It sounds like an interesting idea. however, if your teacher is a very practical person, he or she more might think the idea is too out there Why not ask your teacher? To me, it sounds like an interesting idea and as long as you have enough credible sources than why not?

HELP!!! essay writing. TOPIC: cold war?

We Answered:

There are two issues here.
1. If you are saying you don't yet know what point of view to support, then; you need to decide that before you write. All the supporting paragraphs in the Body should support your Thesis sentence from the Intro. Obviously, you must have a point-of-view to write a thesis sentence; so PICK ONE! (Then make sure all body paragraphs support and prove it.)
2. I think you are stuck on how to actually write the Conclusion...been there. I used to ALWAYS get stuck until I learned this rule. NO NEW INFO IN CONCLUSION. Just take and make ONE new paraphrased Sentence SUMMARIZING FOR EACH BODY PARAGRAPH. For example, if your Thesis were that the Korean War and Cuban Missile Crisis were closely related...You need to have several paragraphs talking about that relationship. After you get to the conclusion...Write One Sentence for each body paragraph...different words.

I hope this helps. Good luck on your essay!
