An essay must be self-explaining. That is, it must make sense to any reader of English.

Each argument should be a distinct paragraph with its own topic sentence. An unusually complex argument may require more than one paragraph of explanation.
The topic sentence for each argument should state its connection to the thesis. Use verbal cues (“similarly,” “in contrast,” “as a result,” “five years later”) to guide the reader through your argument.
Each topic sentence should be supported with specific, detailed evidence. Each piece of evidence must be analyzed. A good rule of thumb is that you should spend at least as much space explaining and analyzing a piece of evidence as you spend presenting it. Thus a two-sentence quotation requires at least two sentences of analysis.
The paragraph is a visual and intellectual aid to the reader. No paragraph should be more than 2/3 of a page long. If your paragraphs are too long, it’s probably because your topic sentences are too broad. Narrow them.
Arrange the body paragraphs in a logical order. Chronological order is often a good choice for history essays. Alternatively, you might choose to move from your most obvious point to your most creative one or to consider possible objections to your thesis first and present your strongest argument last.
The conclusion is a single paragraph that wraps up your argument.
Restate your thesis briefly, but avoid repeating the introduction or summarizing the ideas you have already presented in the body of your essay.
Don’t introduce new arguments in the conclusion.
Go for the big picture: Now that you’ve proven your thesis, so what? What new ideas or conclusions does this suggest? Leave the reader with something to think about after he puts your essay down.
