Nearly all our energy comes from burning something (coal, natural gas, petroleum products, wood, charcoal, etc.) Burning stuff (it all contains carbon) combines the carbon in the fuel with oxygen that produces carbon dioxide (CO2) as a by product. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in our atmosphere. The more energy we save the less stuff we have to burn, the less CO2 in the air, the less heat gets trapped in the atmosphere and the climate gets cooler (at least the climate gets hotter less quickly).

How about nuclear power plants? They don't burn anything.

Well first you have to mine uranium, which means moving a lot of dirt with a lot of gas-burning trucks and bulldozers and then transporting the uranium to a processing plant that uses electricity to spin a centrifuge to get enriched uranium fuel. In the U.S. most of our electricity comes from coal burning steam generated electrical plants. Guess what burning coal gives off? Yup, CO2 not to mention all the gasoline or diesel trucks, bulldozers, drag-line shovels, boats and trains to mine and transport the coal to the electrical generating plant.

The same applies to electric cars, ethanol plants, etc. So save energy anyway you can. It took a lot of spilling of CO2 into the air on its way to getting energetic.

Since it's not due until Thursday, you should watch the movie Food, Inc. to get some ideas. (You can stream it free if you have Netflix.) It will show how the meat industry has changed over the last 50 years and that can help generate some ideas.

I'm a vegetarian, but I don't think the solution is for everyone to stop eating meat. There are better ways for meat production to take place than what is currently happening. Buying food produced locally or by small independent farms is a good first step.
