Law School Essay Writing

Marion Said:

Can I write this in my essay for Law School or is it a bad idea?

We Answered:

It would be better if you showed that you wanted to be a lawyer first by demonstrating your desire while you are in high school. Volunteer at a law office to do anything. Visit the courts in your community, Volunteer at a community food bank to serve the poor. Develop a club at your high school involved with the rights of the ten amendments to the Constitution. Initiate activities for this club poor. Invite lawyers to speak at the club meetings. Invite your history teacher to speak about how the U.S. developed its courts. But, most importantly, use your high school education to major in history or political science. Show with your activities, your behavior, your education that you want to be a lawyer. One of the ways to do that is to write about it in your essay. It would be out of place to mention entertainment law in your essay. That will come later. First will be to embrace the law as your career choice. Good luck.

What kinds of steps can you take toward writing a good personal statement for law school?

We Answered:

Showing how you overcame adversity is always a good topic. Similarly, how you encountered a problem and overcame it. Showed leadership.

Marcia Said:

When applying to a law school what should I indicate in my essay?

We Answered:

Don't lie. That's horrible advice.

Read the question. Law schools don't give interviews. So, this is your chance to give them insight into you and your experiences. If you're a minority or underprivileged some how, you can talk about struggles you went through. If you had a great extra curricular experience that isn't obvious from your resume, you can talk about that. It's really dependent on your own personal situation.

The point is, use it as your one opportunity to give a speech to the admissions people and show them a reason why they should take you.

I'm writing an essay for law school applications. I'm having writer's block ... What do I say?

We Answered:

This is not the time for humor. Write down five times you overcame adversity on a piece of paper. (Hopefully you did not overcome "diversity.") Choose the one that you think makes you look like the Phoenix rising out of the ashes.

Is this something you can write in your Law School essay?

We Answered:

I'm a 3L (third year law student) so I can help:)
Sure, but a little advice: there's technically no such thing a a "pro-bono lawyer." You choose a profession/area of law you would like to practice in: examples include criminal, civil (which encompasses everything other than criminal - family, personal injury, malpractice, environmental, municipal, tax, to name a few). "Pro bono lawyer" isn't so much a title. Rather, it's that you provide free legal services.

If you wish to practice law entirely for free, you better have another career to support yourself or be independently wealthy. When you get your degree and license to practice law (you get this by passing the Bar exam), the American Bar Association (ABA) strongly suggests that you provide 20 hours of pro bono work a year - which is practically nothing. It flies by fast. As a law student, you can be required to complete a minimum of 20-40 hours of pro bono work in order to graduate.

It's part of being an ethical and socially responsible attorney to provide free legal services to those in need.

So for your essay, you can say that you will dedicate a substantial amount of time to pro bono work along with your chosen career path. I don't know exactly what your plans are, so I hope this helps. Or if you are going to be a full-time attorney who needs to support yourself through your legal work, you can say that you would like to volunteer at a free legal clinic or you can work for a Legal Aid Office to help people with low incomes or who are indigent. If you work (as opposed to volunteering) for Legal Aid, you will get a salary - it's not much, but you get to help people in need.

Working in the public sector, as opposed to private(law firms, private offices) sector, you may not make as much but you can help people, it can be rewarding, and there are tuition repayment programs (where if you only make so much and work for so many years, and then pay back a certain amount of loans) the rest can be forgiven, :) A plus considering how expensive a law degree is.

Be honest on your Essay. Don't spout BS and fluff about providing free services and make empty promises you don't plan on keeping just to make yourself look good. Although, everybody does. Do NOT lie about what activities you have done. You get investigated when you take the Bar and if they find out you lied on your resume, that could reflect badly on you and actually PREVENT you from taking the Bar. It's called "Character and Fitness." You have a lot of power and are very influential when you're an attorney so the ABA wants to sort out the riff-raff.

Good luck applying!!! Hope this helps. You want to make yourself look good, because the essay is an audition, but I hope that you mean it:) Best wishes!!
