First of all, I would recommend that you look up the Extended Essay Guide for your subject area (in this case, Visual Arts). When you're writing your essay, make sure that you follow the rules in this guide. Your IB coordinator should have some at your school.

Another tip I have is to START AND FINISH EARLY! While I finished my essay at least a week before the deadline, I was still up the entire day before compulsively making sure that my grammar, spelling, citations, font, whatever, were all correct. Also, make sure you can actually write a paper on your topic. If you can only find one source that barely applies to your topic, you may need to change it. Although, this may be different for subject areas.

Acceptance never heavily relies on the essay. If you don't have the grades or test scores or a way to make yourself stand out, the essay won't do that for you unless you're writing about something you couldn't tell or show them in another way.

well let me see, I wrote my essay to columbia college, and I did it for a cousin of mine too. Grammar and punctation are #1, have a unique and eye catching 1st sentence. I always notice that I catch a reaers attention by having a great first few sentences. Another is be honest and brag about yourself. It usually depends on the question taht they ask. Mines to Columbia was why do do you want to attend Columbia, what are your long term goals, and what do you hope to get out of it. If you know what you want to study put passion and knowledge into that particular major. thats what worked for me. Have some people read it over before you send it too.
