Writing about one's mother is not quite as common as you'd think, because most students have the exact same thought process and discard the idea as too "common".

Having said that, an essay about one's mother still produces a few groans because it's somewhat pedantic. That doesn't mean you shouldn't write it though. What you need to concentrate on is what makes your mom so unique and such an important influence on your life.

In other words, it's not the subject that is key, it's the reasoning behind it. Is your mother's influence truly unique and powerful on your life? Concentrate on expressing that in such a way that makes the readers realize that there truely is no other person who would have been more suitable a subject.

You'll know you're on the right track when you're actually writing it. Start making your notes, your list of points that you want to address in the essay. Look them over and ask yourself one last time - is mom truly the biggest and best influence or was there someone that may have outdone her?

You have to make the reader see why your mother (or any subject really) deserves their respect.

What there are looking for is an essay that is primarily your own views and conclusions about the subject. You can cite statistics or specific information from your research, but do not merely lift passages from other people's writing and combine those to form an essay. That is essentially plagiarism and you will never get any kind of scholarship based on stealing the work of others and hoping no one notices.

List your sources at the end of the essay and be sure to use a spell check program so there are no misspelled words. I would have a couple of adults read the essay to see if it flows well or if they have any suggestions to make it better before you send it in.
