How To Write A University Essay

Don Said:

How do you write essays in university?

We Answered:

Look, I can tell just by reading what you typed that you have the potential to become a great writer! You have a good grasp of the structural and stylistic necessities of writing, and you didn't misspell many words. I know, because I write for a living!

The thing with college writing is that every professor is different and has different expectations. You will write many different types of papers in college, some easy, some dreadfully difficult.

Many professors know that writing is not the strong suit of most people, so they aren't too picky when it comes to grading. Then, there are those professors who wouldn't be happy if Ernest Hemingway handed in a paper.

The good news is that most colleges require you to take at least two English composition courses. In these classes, you will learn the fundamentals of several styles of writing. There are myriad styles, as I said before. For example, a journalism student is going to be required to write papers and essays that are much different from those a chemistry major would write. Also, a journalism student is going to need to have some basic talent at writing to succeed in his or her field. Most chemists know very little about writing, as it's just not a necessity in that field.

That said, any person who considers themselves educated should be proficient at writing and communication in general. Trust me, I can tell from what you've written that you will be fine. You are already WAY ahead of most of the people who will be sitting next to you in your English classes!

How should i write a university/college level essay during a final?

We Answered:

Looks like you didn't get an answer in time... but for the NEXT time, here are some pointers:

1) First, get some ideas going and jot some stuff down on a scrap piece of paper, to help you organize your thoughts.

2) Then quickly figure out an orderly way to present what you want to write, instead of just writing stuff in a jumbled mess.

3) Write brief paragraphs for each of your points, to help you further organize things.

4) Aim for concision: this will make it easier for the marker, who will have less to read!! The higher the ratio between "accurate, relevant and useful" content and actual word number, the better. So, work on this important concept: it will make quite a difference in your marks, as well as in life in general.
