How To Write A Great Essay

How to write a great essay? We Answered:
You will first need to do some research...(and NO there is no easier way.) (Some websites below are provided to review for general information.)After you have done some research and have formed an opinion you want to emphasize, that is the time to start outlining and writing your essay.
Remember that if it is compelling to you, it will probably also be compelling to your audience. If it is to only be a written work, you can give more info. If it is to also be a presentation, you may have to stick to a few easy to express/remember points. If it is to be BOTH, be sure you have a good introduction.

How to write a GREAT essay? We Answered:
No.Usually best to hit the ground running - short opening paragraph saying what your argument is/what you think/your thesis straight away. Say exactly what your essay will discuss and the order in which you will talk about it. Make it short but make it clear to the examiner what you are arguing and what exactly you are going to say. Be concise throughout your essays - don't say something in a paragraph when you could say it in a sentence. Don't be pompous; be plain and simple.
A useful model you can use is: thesis, antithesis (the counter argument to your thesis), then synthesis (where you combine all strings and iron out the best ideas)
In terms of English specifically; talk about use of language in the text, what is interesting about it. Why do you think the author has chosen those words? Is these alliteration, a simile, a metaphor, a rhetorical question...etc; why do you think the author has used it, do you like it and why. Compare different sections of the text and compare and contrast them i.e. one character might say/act in such a way and act or say something different later on - why? Comment on character development. Comment on the context in which book/poem was written and how it effects the text.
Also BIGGEST piece of advice I can give for English is that you can say ANYTHING and it will be right. There are no wrong answers ever. Anything you say is valid so don't be afraid. There's a thing called post modernism which basically allows you to say anything even if it may be nothing like what the author intended.
Edit: You don't get it. You compare and contrasts pieces of language within anything you do - it's not the essay title. You might compare the beginning of a poem - which may be upbeat - with the end - which may be sad. Regards to your opinions flowing - the key is PEE - point, evidence, explanation e.g. A key theme in Hamlet is x. This can be seen here when x does this. And then y does that. (I think) this is because x...I like this part because...I think this theme is overdone a bit and could be been made subtler...etc etc
Regards answering the question; answer the question!!!!!! If you really have problems with this I suggest you reference it as many times as you can when you write and use the words of the question throughout - you might say reference the question at the beginning of every paragraph, maybe more. Then you won't start going off track and talking about what you want to talk about.

How the hell do you write GREAT essays/long responses in HSC exams? We Answered:
How the hell do you write great essays? You get off your butt and practice. It's actually quite easy - especially english. If you know quotes and concepts, you are fine. This goes for all english modules. For other subjects such as history, you need to know your information so make sure you learn it. The key to doing well in subjects that involve writing is to practice. There is a great site called Tutor Tales - it lists SO many different essay questions for english, and for the belonging module, they are grouped into similar categories. Make sure you can do one from each. So in your spare time, give it a go - it doesn't have to be great. Just try and finish it. Doesn't matter if it takes you a week to do... then ask your teacher to mark it. Start practicing now.Today was my last HSC exam. I can honestly say that I really really wish I had put more time into writing practice essays for English and Business studies - although I know I didn't do too badly, better essays would have really boosted my marks.
Don't worry, you won't fail. Be succinct. Don't repeat yourself over and over - unless it's in the topic sentence and final sentence of each paragraph. Stick to the topic - when you start writing essays, read everything you write twice, and get rid of any unnecessary rubbish that isn't relevant. So yes. Sorry to state the obvious, but really, practice will help SO much. You also might want to get a hold of past sample answers - the high range responses will give you a good indication of what you should be writing about. Good luck.
