How can I write a good college admissions essay?

We Answered:

You are pretty much telling a story. Just don't say I choose this major because of this and that.

Usually, we have a particular experience(s) that guide us to our conclusion. I doubt CSI or other shows are good reasons.

Also, do you have any related skills or experiences that you think are setting you on the right path towards this goal. If you applications does not allow you list any achievements/awards, then you could probably work one in. Like you were in officer of the science club and would have an annual field trip. This one time we went to a state park and explored the surrounding woods.

Your trying to make yourself stand out. I am sure they will expect you might change your major.

But they want to see if you really thought your choice through and can effectively communicate those points.

High SAT Scores, Good Extracurriculars and College Essay, low GPA?

It really just depends. He could get in and he could not get in, it just really depends, but it does happen. If you have ever read the Hopeless to Harvard blog, the author goes to Stanford but he graduated high school with like a 3.3 GPA or something.

The first thing you need to ask yourself why you think you're having so much trouble. If it's because you are suffering from the run of the mill writer's block then take a quick run through this article to learn how to get it under control: http://www.accreditedonlinecolleges.com/… . It may be something as simple as you are unable to focus because you are hungry.

If you do all the things that the article suggests, then the second thing you can do is carefully collect your thoughts and address the prompt again—in this case, you need to really evaluate why you have a passion for journalism in the first place. Is it because you've always had a longing to inform the public of vital information? Do you want to become a journalist because you want to give a voice to those who can't speak for themselves—for instance maybe you want to report on a particular minority group? With that said, it's also a good idea to express future goals and aspirations. Do you want to start up your own magazine for example? Discuss what you want to do with your degree and why. You also need to explain to admission officers how you think studying at that particular school will help you with your goals. Did you hear it's the best journalism program in the country? Are there any notable graduates that you aspire to emulate?

Once you do get accepted into the journalism department, here is a great article that lists the 50 best blogs for journalism students. http://www.accreditedonlinecolleges.com/… You might even be able to argue in your essay that following these blogs proves your true dedication to journalism and the news.

How do you write a good personal essay for college admission?

We Answered:

My advice would be to begin the writing process with the 2nd paragraph. Tell your story. Then read it to get the main emphasis and come up with an attention getting first sentence and/or paragraph.

Don't b.s. The people who review these things can see through that in a minute. Be sincere but try to be a little original.

My son's college essay was supposed to be about a life changing event and how it would help him succeed in college. He chose to write about setting a state record in swimming, but rather than tell the events, step by step, he told how he felt... how he could hear the water rushing past, how his heart was pounding, how the crowd sounded, how he could see his competition gaining and how his legs and lungs burned. He told how his thoughts were racing and how he thought of all the hours of practice and how much he had dreamed of that moment. He made the point of how he had had to work for years to achieve his goal and was successful, but made it exciting and interesting to read. I think his opening sentence was "This was my moment. This was my victory".... It got him into Dartmouth.

How to write a good transfer application essay for college?

We Answered:

Depends on what they are looking for. Some programs give prompts which you need to answer others just want a personal statement.

For either one make sure you say your educational and career goals. Why you want to trade universities. How you have prepared. How this particular program fits into your goals.

Keep it to the point and don't try to add in lots of extra fluff. And make it personal. Don't worry so much about being unique, but be honest and make it personalized.

Discuss It!
