How To Write A Good College Application Essay

Hector Said:

good topics to write about in my college application essay if applying to mainly Catholic universities?

We Answered:

Kemper K: Slanted view? You're getting Catholic elementary schools confused with Catholic Universities. While you are most certainly surrounded around by the dogma of the church, your education will most certainly not be infiltrated by it. Most Catholic universities encourage respect and intense contemplation -- yes, even about religions beyond Catholicism. The difference between a non-catholic university and a catholic one is that you will be expected to live admidst a culture of service and ethics. -- Oh and Catholic Universities notoriously have some of the best science research centers in the entire country. Look at Notre Dame for example.

Mercedez: It's great that you're already working on your essays. But know that the most important factors for admission are your ACT/SAT scores, GPA, and class rank. You should also be taking the toughest classes you can. Beyond that your essay should focus on the importance of education in your life and your social justice volunteer experience. Personalize it, talk about a time you were volunteering when you really learned something and how you grew from the experience. You could also discuss your desire to live in and build community. Just be yourself and proofread lots before you send it in. I honestly think you should stay away from just writing that abortion is bad. There's more to being Catholic than being anti-abortion.

College application essay: Personal opinions that cannot be validated? Good or bad idea?

We Answered:

Good idea. Colleges want to see YOU in the essay. This isn't your standard research, report, cite your sources writing piece; it's a window into your personality and life. I think it's a great idea.

Honestly on a scale of 1-10, I'd give you a 4 or 5. You have couple of run on sentences, couple comma errors... etc In the begninng, you sounded kind of boastful. You also dont have abundant amount of unique vocabs.
