I'm sorry to say that your teacher is right, however, there is help.
first off your paper is a synopsis of the book. That is a no no.
Start with a good thesis, in other words the main points you want people to get out of what you read. Here is an example (not from your book) "Jessie james's qualities that personify him as brutal killer are X, Y, Z, A, B"
Just remeber your not asking a question your making a statement. Once you make those statements focus each paragraph or more on each of those areas and explain why.

Here is a useful website that you can watch on youtube http://www.writing.ku.edu/~writing/about…

And here is the basics of an essay.

Good luck and dont give up. The more you do the easier it gets.

How to write a formal essay for SAT or ACT test?

We Answered:

Starting with a question can be a good idea. It all depends on how it's executed. Here's an example:

"Is it appropriate for a student to start his or her formal essays with a question? It is surrounded by much controversy, but this writing technique does have a number of benefits."

Sorry for such a corny example, hope it's helped you!

How do i write a formal essay when I'm writing from personal experience?

We Answered:

Remember, dont use nicknames like using mom, ma, and mother. Just use 1 term, mother, throughout. Dont use slang words other than if people are quoted. When you bring in new characters, tell only points in their past that relates to the story at hand.

How do I write a formal essay on behaviour as communication?

We Answered:

If it is a research paper, be sure not to use the word 'I'. The opening is the most important. I recently wrote a research paper and this is how my teacher had us organize things:
Opening Paragrah:
Catch: This is something that will really grab the readers attention and make them want to read your paper
Thesis Statement: This is the main idea that you are trying to get across. It should one sentence maybe two.
Summarized Information: After you gather all of you information, group them together. Each group should be one piece of supporting information. Then you take the main point of each group and write them in your opening next.
Concluding Sentence: Pretty much just restate your thesis staement but in differnt words.
Then you want to take one of the the groups of infromation that you made and make it into a paragraph(s).
Your concludong paragraph is like your opening but it is more closing. You Pretty much just restate you thesis statement, restate all of the main points of you groups, and finish off with a nice concluding sentence.

Hope this helps and good luck with your paper!
